The Collected Retreat: Designed Around a Life Well Lived

Some homes are filled with beautiful things.
The most meaningful homes are filled with stories.

This primary suite design in Maryland was created for a world-traveled couple seeking a retreat that reflected their love of reading, collecting, and family.
When our clients purchased their horse farm, they envisioned a home that reflected the life they had built together—one shaped by travel, family, and a deep appreciation for the objects and artwork they had collected over the years. They wanted their home to feel warm, personal, and connected to the people who lived there.
The primary suite became an opportunity to do exactly that.
A Maryland Primary Suite Design Inspired by a Life Well Lived
The spacious bedroom overlooked the rolling landscape of the farm and included a large sitting area, but the space wasn’t being used to its full potential. As avid readers, our clients had accumulated an extensive book collection, yet many of their books lived in stacks throughout the room. Artwork and collected objects held personal meaning but lacked a dedicated place to be displayed and appreciated

Rather than treating the sitting area as an afterthought, we reimagined it as a library lounge—a comfortable retreat where our clients could slow down, read, reflect, and enjoy the view of their property.
Custom dual-toned built-ins became the centerpiece of the design. The cabinetry provided generous storage for their book collection while creating opportunities to display artwork, travel finds, and meaningful objects gathered throughout their lives. Every shelf was designed to tell part of their story.

Throughout the suite, we layered soft textures, comfortable furnishings, and a neutral palette, allowing the collected pieces to take center stage. The result feels calm and restorative while remaining deeply personal.
Today, the lounge area has become one of the most loved spaces in the home. Our clients regularly spend time reading, relaxing, and even taking afternoon naps surrounded by the books, artwork, and memories that matter most to them.

At Curated Home Designs, we believe the most beautiful homes aren’t designed around trends. They’re designed around the people who live in them. The Collected Retreat is a reflection of that philosophy. A home that celebrates a life well lived and the stories still being written.
